鄉域輪廓，頗似以南北方向為高，東西方向為底的倒梯形，北邊較寬而南邊較窄，南北方向的長度約七公里；東西方向的寬度，在北邊約九公里，南邊則約為五公里，全鄉面積為52.5046平方公里。鄉域地形由東南向西北傾斜，數條溪流隨著地勢穿梭其間；明德水庫座落於鄉域北部的老田寮溪中游，湖面翠嶺環繞，嵐影波光，是縣內頗負盛名的觀光據點。
境內主要的河流為老田寮溪，屬後龍溪的支流。
